TikTok Faces U.S. Ban Amid National Security Concerns
This would be a sad day for tik tok creators.
The U.S. House of Representatives has taken a significant step toward potentially banning TikTok, the popular video-sharing app owned by China-based company ByteDance. The bipartisan vote of 352-65 signals growing alarm over TikTok’s potential threat to national security.
The House passed legislation that could lead to a U.S. ban on TikTok unless it separates from ByteDance. Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) voted present.
Security Concerns: Lawmakers argue that TikTok’s ties to China pose risks. The Chinese government could exploit intelligence laws to access data from U.S. app users.
Next Steps: The bill now heads to the Senate, where its fate remains uncertain and of course President Joe Biden has indicated support for the measure.
Impact:
If enacted, TikTok would have approximately five months to sever ties with ByteDance.
App stores in the U.S. could be banned from hosting TikTok if the separation doesn’t occur.
Response: TikTok has urged the Senate to consider the facts, while China’s foreign ministry labeled the House vote an “act of bullying.”
